What is a chair massage?
Twenty minutes in a chair with your clothes on, no oil and nothing to take off. You lean forward into a padded chair that carries the weight of your chest, arms and forehead, and the therapist works from behind you: the back of the neck, across the shoulders, down either side of the upper spine.
Square lists it as Chair Massage, and it is the shortest booking LJY Reflexology takes. Downtown is fifteen to twenty minutes west of the door, straight down Lebanon Pike, so a chair massage near Nashville is a stop rather than an afternoon: there is nothing to undress for, and the visit runs close to its booked length.
What the chair cannot reach is the rest of you: sitting up and dressed, the low back, hips and legs do not get worked the way a table session reaches them, and there are no long oiled strokes to carry the work along. What the chair does buy is the neck, shoulders, back and arms worked properly, with none of the setup a table session needs.
Nothing to undress for and no oil to wash off later, which is why the chair suits the middle of a working day.
What does a chair massage work on?
Neck, shoulders, upper back, arms and hands — the places that stiffen from holding one position for hours. Sitting forward opens the space between the shoulder blades and gives the therapist a straight line down either side of the spine.
If you work at a desk
The pattern is dull and consistent: a band across the top of the shoulders, one side tighter than the other, and a stiff spot at the base of the skull. It tracks a screen set below eye level and a mouse hand that barely moves through an 8 hour day. A short session goes at those three places and leaves the rest alone.
If you drive all day
Driving loads the same muscles from a different angle: hands fixed on the wheel, shoulders held forward, neck locked on the road. Forearms and hands are worth asking for, because most people ask for the neck and stop there, and the forearm is where a good deal of grip tension ends up.
Does massage help a stiff neck?
The short-term evidence is mildly encouraging and the long-term evidence is thin. NCCIH's summary of what the science says cites a 2013 review of 12 studies with 757 participants that found massage more helpful for neck and shoulder pain than inactive treatments, though no better than other active treatments, and for shoulder pain the benefit was short-term only.
Length and frequency seem to matter. The same summary describes a 2014 trial of 228 people with chronic nonspecific neck pain in which 60 minute sessions given several times a week worked better than shorter or less frequent ones. That is a course of treatment rather than a single visit, so book a seated session for how it feels afterwards, and see a clinician about a neck that has hurt for months.
The evidence on headache is weaker again, and worth knowing if that is why you are booking. The NCCIH fact sheet on massage describes a 2015 study in which 56 people with tension headaches were assigned to trigger-point massage, an inactive treatment or a waiting list, twice a week for 6 weeks; both treated groups reported fewer headaches, with no difference between them. Treat the session as comfort and take the headaches to a clinician.
Should I book 20, 30, 45 or 60 minutes?
Twenty minutes if it is only the neck and shoulders; 45 or 60 if you want the arms, forearms and hands as well. The prices are $35 for 20 minutes, $50 for 30, $70 for 45 and $80 for the hour, and the longer bookings leave time to work a stubborn spot twice.
Fitting one into a lunch break
The 20 minute booking is the one that fits an hour away from a desk once you allow for the drive each way. Book it ahead on Square, or call the front desk and they will find a slot.
When to book the table instead
An hour in the chair and an hour on the table both cost $80, and the table reaches the low back, hips and legs that a chair cannot. If your back is the problem, book table massage. If undressing, oil or lying face down is the problem, stay in the chair.
- Say where it hurts before you sit down; through a shirt there is less for a therapist to read.
- Ask for forearms and hands if you type or drive, or they will get skipped.
- Wear something you can move your shoulders in — a stiff collar makes the neck harder to reach.
- Give the pressure a number from 1 to 10, then correct it out loud once they start.
| Length | Price | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| 20 minutes | $35 | Neck and shoulders, once through |
| 30 minutes | $50 | Neck, shoulders and upper back, with time to return to one tight spot |
| 45 minutes | $70 | The above plus arms, forearms and hands |
| 60 minutes | $80 | Neck, shoulders, back, arms and hands unhurried, as far down the back as the chair reaches |
Can I put feet and chair into the same hour?
That is Combination B: 30 minutes of foot reflexology followed by 30 minutes in the chair, 60 minutes for $80. It costs the same as an hour of either treatment on its own, so the hour covers two areas instead of one.
Square lists the foot half first, and that is the order to keep. You finish sitting upright and dressed, which is the better state to be in if you are driving straight back to work.
The table version of the same idea is Combination A, 60 minutes for $90, covered on the foot massage page.
How do I book, and when are you open?
Square takes the booking, or call (615) 835-2603 and the front desk will find a time. LJY Reflexology is at 3877 Lebanon Pike, Hermitage, TN 37076, with free parking in the lot outside the door.
Hours are 10 AM to 8 PM on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 11 AM to 4 PM on Tuesday, and 12 to 7 PM on Sunday. Old Hickory is about ten minutes north and Donelson about ten minutes west, so a session in the chair is a local errand from either.
The contact page carries the map and directions if this is a first visit, and the chair massage listing puts the four lengths and prices side by side before you pick one.
Questions people ask
How much is a chair massage near Nashville?
A chair massage near Nashville costs $35 for 20 minutes at LJY Reflexology in Hermitage, then $50 for 30, $70 for 45 and $80 for 60 minutes. You keep your clothes on for every length. Combination B pairs half an hour of foot reflexology with half an hour in the chair for $80.
Do I have to undress for a chair massage?
No. You stay in your clothes the whole time, there is no oil, and you sit rather than lie down. Wear something you can move your shoulders in, and leave a heavy jacket at the front.
Is 20 minutes long enough to be worth it?
For the neck and shoulders, yes — that is what the shortest booking is built around. If you want arms, forearms and hands included, book 45 minutes. In one 2014 trial of 228 people with chronic neck pain, 60 minute sessions given several times a week worked better than shorter or less frequent ones, so longer is the safer bet if the stiffness is persistent.
What is the difference between a chair massage and a table massage?
The chair keeps you clothed and seated and works the neck, shoulders, upper back and arms. The table uses oil and reaches the low back, hips and legs. At 60 minutes both cost $80, so the question is how much of you needs work and whether you want to undress.
How far is LJY Reflexology from downtown Nashville?
About fifteen to twenty minutes east on Lebanon Pike, traffic depending, and roughly nine miles. Old Hickory is about ten minutes north and Mt. Juliet about twelve minutes east, one exit out. Parking is free in the lot outside the door.
Can I book a chair massage on a Sunday?
Yes, between 12 and 7 PM. Tuesday is the short day at 11 AM to 4 PM, and the rest of the week runs 10 AM to 8 PM. Book on Square or call (615) 835-2603.
Is chair massage good for neck pain from desk work?
It may help in the short term. A 2013 review of 12 studies and 757 participants found massage more helpful for neck and shoulder pain than inactive treatments, though not better than other active treatments, and the shoulder benefits were short-term only. If pain has lasted months or comes with numbness, see a clinician first.
